WHAT DO I WEAR?
There are quite a few factors that play into the outfit(s) you choose for your session. Believe it or not, what you choose to wear has everything to do with the final outcome of your gallery!
Matching the Vibe of Your Location
When choosing your outfit, think about the environment we’re shooting in. We want your clothes to complement the backdrop, not compete with it!
- For a field or nature setting: Lean into organic textures and flowy pieces that move with the wind to capture that effortless, romantic feel. Try to avoid tight fitting clothing such as bodycon type dresses.
- For an industrial or urban location: You can go a bit more structured, modern, or chic—think a tailored trench, clean denim, or a sleek monochromatic look.
- For a studio session: This is where we can get super intentional. Whether you want a cozy, intimate lounge vibe or a clean, timeless editorial look, let’s make sure your outfit matches the mood of the space. For someone going with a solid background - avoid wearing the exact color of your backdrop especially if your background is solid black or white. This can give the illusion that you're a floating head, haha!
Choosing your Color Scheme
The colors you choose have a big play in the outcome of your session! Earthy tones and neutrals are the secret sauce.
When you wear super bright or vibrant colors, two things happen. First, they act like a giant reflector, bouncing that bright color right back up onto your skin—which can leave distracting, unnatural tints on your face and neck. Second, vibrant clothes tend to steal the spotlight, making the images feel a bit "loud."
By choosing white, creams, tans, browns, beautiful muted pastels, or even denim, you ensure that you are the focus of the photo, not your clothes. It keeps your skin tones looking absolutely flawless and allows the true emotion of the moment to shine through!
My absolute favorite colors are white and light cream, these always photograph so beautifully.
TTU GRADS - Keep in mind, red at Tech is one of the rare acceptions!!! :) It pairs best with a neutral location such as the staircases or seal!
Patterns & Logos - Less is More
Try to keep patterns minimal. Large graphics, bold stripes, or distracting logos can take the focus away from you. Subtle textures and patterns like linen, silk, lace, or light contrasted gingham or stripes are a fantastic way to add visual depth to your images without adding visual noise!
Movement & Layers
Think about how your outfit moves. Flowy dresses, skirts, or unbuttoned overshirts capture beautifully in motion and add a gorgeous energy to your photos. Don't be afraid to layer up! A denim jacket or something layered with texture are fun ways to elevate your look!
The Ultimate Rule: Comfort & Confidence
At the end of the day, the absolute best thing you can wear is confidence. If you feel restricted, uncomfortable, or like you're trying to fit into a style that isn't "you," it will show up in your expressions. Pick something that makes you feel amazing when you look in the mirror.
